With Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) formally established in 1953, consolidating five diverse companies under a single banner, and the 'Subaru' brand name chosen—a celestial reference signifying unification and guidance—the company embarked on its pivotal journey into vehicle manufacturing. This venture was not a sudden pivot but a strategic evolution from its varied post-war activities, which included manufacturing rolling stock, industrial engines, and famously, the popular 'Rabbit' scooter. The Rabbit, first introduced in 1946, showcased FHI's existing expertise in lightweight construction, efficient design, and mass production techniques, skills largely honed from its pre-war aviation heritage as Nakajima Aircraft Company, a prominent aircraft manufacturer. However, the true test of its automotive ambition came with the development of a production car for the broader Japanese market.

The post-war era in Japan was characterized by a pressing demand for affordable, practical transportation for the masses. The nation's infrastructure was recovering, incomes were gradually rising, and the government, through influential agencies like the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), actively promoted the development of key industries, including automotive, to stimulate economic growth and provide mobility for its burgeoning workforce. This urgent need gave rise to the 'kei car' segment, initially introduced in 1949 and continually refined through the 1950s. These microcars were designed to meet specific government regulations regarding engine displacement (initially 360 cc for passenger cars, later expanded to 550 cc, and subsequently 660 cc), strict dimensions (length, width, height), and power output limitations. Vehicles adhering to these guidelines benefited significantly from lower purchase taxes, annual road taxes, and simplified parking regulations, making them an economically viable option for many Japanese families and small businesses who could not afford larger, imported, or domestically produced vehicles.

In 1958, Subaru officially launched its first mass-produced automobile, the Subaru 360. This vehicle was a direct, pragmatic response to both the stringent 'kei car' regulations of the time and the prevailing economic conditions, which necessitated extreme affordability and efficiency. Developed under the astute leadership of chief engineer Shinroku Momose, a former aircraft designer with extensive experience from Nakajima Aircraft, the Subaru 360 embodied FHI's aerospace engineering principles. It was a remarkably compact and lightweight two-door, rear-engined car, measuring just under 3 meters in length (2,990 mm) and 1.3 meters in width (1,300 mm). Its combination of affordability, robust construction, and surprisingly spacious interior for its class allowed it to gain significant traction in the domestic market. Between 1958 and its eventual discontinuation in 1971, over 392,000 units of the Subaru 360 were sold in Japan, establishing Subaru as a credible player in the burgeoning Japanese automotive industry. The company’s financial challenges in these early years were considerable. Subaru differentiated itself not through aggressive marketing spend, which it could not afford, but through the demonstrable engineering integrity of its products. This strategy allowed Subaru to carve out its niche, appealing to discerning customers who valued build quality and thoughtful design, even if the vehicles were less glamorous than some imported alternatives. The lessons learned from the 360's production cycle, market feedback, and competitive analysis were invaluable, informing the development of subsequent models and reinforcing Subaru’s commitment to engineering distinction.

The Subaru 360 proved to be a critical first major milestone, unequivocally demonstrating FHI's ability to not only design and manufacture an automobile but also to successfully market and sell it on a mass scale. Its sustained positive reception and sales volume in Japan provided essential market validation for Subaru's nascent automotive division and confidence for continued investment. However, the company's ambitions extended beyond the domestic market.

Initial export attempts, particularly to the United States starting in 1968, proved significantly more challenging. Imported by entrepreneur Malcolm Bricklin, the 360 was marketed as an ultra-affordable second car for American families, priced at a remarkably low $1,297. Despite its low price, it struggled profoundly to meet differing market expectations and stringent regulatory standards. American consumers, accustomed to larger, more powerful vehicles, found the 360 underpowered for sustained highway speeds and its passive safety features inadequate by prevailing U.S. standards. A particularly damaging Consumer Reports article in 1969, which rated the 360 "unacceptable" due to severe safety and performance concerns, severely hampered its sales prospects. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Transportation reclassified it as a car rather than a motor scooter, subjecting it to more rigorous safety standards, which the 360 could not meet without significant and costly redesign. These challenges limited its U.S. sales to fewer than 10,000 units before imports ceased in 1970. Despite this setback, the experience provided invaluable lessons regarding international market demands, regulatory compliance, and consumer preferences, critically informing the development of Subaru's next generation of vehicles and its strategy for future international expansion.

By the mid-1960s, the Japanese economy was rapidly expanding, and with rising disposable incomes, there was a growing demand for more sophisticated and capable passenger cars beyond the utilitarian 'kei car' segment. Subaru was poised to capitalize on this shift, signaling its ambition to move into the larger, more competitive passenger car market. This strategic pivot culminated in the introduction of the Subaru 1000 in May 1966.

The Subaru 1000 represented a monumental technical leap for the company and indeed for the Japanese automotive industry. It was not merely an incremental improvement but a vehicle that introduced two pivotal innovations that would profoundly define Subaru's engineering identity for decades to come, becoming synonymous with the brand: a horizontally opposed (Boxer) engine and front-wheel drive (FWD) for a mass-produced Japanese passenger car.

The Boxer engine, specifically a 977 cc, water-cooled, flat-four unit initially producing 55 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, was a direct testament to FHI's engineering ingenuity. Its design, with cylinders opposed horizontally, allowed for a significantly lower center of gravity, which inherently enhanced vehicle stability and reduced body roll during cornering. Furthermore, the opposing piston movements inherently balanced each other, resulting in remarkably reduced vibration and a smoother, more refined engine operation compared to conventional inline engines of the era. This engine configuration also contributed to a flatter, lower hood line, improving aerodynamic efficiency and outward visibility. The decision to use a water-cooled engine, rather than air-cooled as in the 360, also marked a step towards greater refinement and thermal stability.

Equally transformative was the adoption of front-wheel drive. While FWD had been experimented with in other markets, its widespread application in a mass-produced Japanese passenger car was groundbreaking. FWD offered several distinct advantages: superior traction, particularly in adverse conditions, as the engine's weight was directly over the drive wheels; more efficient packaging, eliminating the need for a bulky transmission tunnel and rear differential, thereby maximizing interior passenger and luggage space; and enhanced stability. The Subaru 1000 achieved this with an innovative "symmetrical" layout, positioning the engine longitudinally and the transmission directly behind it, which maintained a balanced weight distribution, further enhancing stability and handling, a precursor to the symmetrical all-wheel-drive system for which Subaru would later become famous.

The Subaru 1000 quickly garnered attention for its quiet and smooth ride, exceptional stability, and legendary durability. It demonstrated Subaru's unwavering commitment to distinctive and advanced engineering solutions, differentiating the brand significantly from its larger domestic rivals like Toyota and Nissan, who predominantly relied on conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configurations for their mainstream sedans.
