The late 19th century in France presented a dynamic, though nascent, landscape for mechanical innovation, particularly in the realm of personal transportation. While steam-powered vehicles, such as those pioneered by Cugnot over a century prior, had existed for decades, and electric vehicles were gaining traction in urban settings due to their quiet operation and cleanliness, the internal combustion engine was beginning to demonstrate its potential for greater efficiency, range, and practicality, particularly for longer journeys. This period was characterized by individual inventors and small workshops experimenting with rudimentary motor carriages. These vehicles, often built to bespoke specifications for a wealthy clientele, were high-cost luxury items, with a typical automobile costing several thousand francs – a significant sum equivalent to a skilled worker's annual wage.

The nascent industry lacked standardization and mass production capabilities, largely operating on an artisanal model where engineers and mechanics crafted vehicles by hand, frequently assembling components sourced from various specialist manufacturers. This particular invention, patented in February 1898, demonstrated his practical engineering acumen and provided a foundational technological advantage for his future endeavors, differentiating his designs from many contemporaries. His motivation extended beyond mere hobbyism; records indicate a clear intent to commercialize his designs and enter the burgeoning automotive market.

In December 1898, Louis Renault demonstrated his self-built Voiturette Type A, a small, two-seater vehicle featuring his innovative direct-drive system, to friends on the steep Rue Lepic in Montmartre, Paris. The street, known for its challenging 13% incline, provided an ideal proving ground for the vehicle's capabilities. The Voiturette's surprising performance on the incline, combined with the novelty and evident efficiency of its direct transmission, reportedly garnered immediate interest. This led to a dozen firm orders on the spot from impressed onlookers, each reportedly for 3,000 francs – a competitive price point for a new automobile at the time. This early success underscored the nascent market demand for a reliable, efficient, and relatively simple personal automobile. While Louis possessed the technical prowess for design and manufacturing, his brothers, Marcel and Fernand, provided the critical business and administrative support necessary to transition from individual invention to a structured enterprise. Their collective backgrounds, spanning commercial operations and financial management from the family's established textile business, complemented Louis’s technical focus, laying the groundwork for a robust company structure.

The initial business concept centered on manufacturing and selling these Voiturettes, leveraging Louis's mechanical innovations to create a distinct market offering. The value proposition revolved around the vehicle's simplicity of operation, enhanced reliability compared to chain-driven alternatives, and the efficiency offered by the direct drive system. Early production was largely confined to a small workshop measuring just 60 square meters, located on the family's property in Billancourt, a suburb of Paris. The operational scale was modest, relying on a small team of mechanics and a rudimentary assembly process where parts were often hand-fitted. Challenges at this stage included sourcing components, as many parts (such as tires, lamps, and even engines, which were initially bought from De Dion-Bouton before Renault began producing its own) were themselves in early stages of development and often lacked standardization across suppliers. To raise capital and formalize their growing operations, the brothers jointly established Société Renault Frères on February 25, 1899. Each brother contributed 60,000 francs to the initial capital, signifying a serious commitment to the venture. This substantial investment, totaling 180,000 francs, provided the financial backing necessary to expand the workshop, acquire more specialized machinery, and hire additional skilled labor beyond the initial handful of workers. Marcel and Fernand managed the business and financial aspects, including sales, marketing, and procurement, while Louis dedicated himself to design, production, and technical development. This clear division of labor allowed the company to professionalize its structure rapidly, moving beyond a hobbyist pursuit. The formal incorporation provided the legal and financial framework necessary for expansion, enabling them to hire more staff—growing to approximately 60 employees by the end of 1899—and gradually increase their manufacturing capacity. In its first full year of operation, Société Renault Frères produced 71 vehicles, a notable achievement for a new entrant in a highly competitive market. Production figures continued to climb rapidly, reaching 179 vehicles in 1900 and 347 in 1901.

Racing quickly became a cornerstone of Renault's early marketing strategy. Participation in long-distance city-to-city races, such as the Paris-Trouville, Paris-Rambouillet, and later the Paris-Ostend events, served not only to promote the brand but also to rigorously test and improve vehicle designs under extreme conditions. These early races, often covering hundreds of kilometers on poorly maintained roads, presented immense challenges, including dust, mechanical breakdowns, and navigation difficulties. Successes in these public spectacles provided compelling, visible evidence of Renault's mechanical durability, reliability, and performance—crucial attributes in an era where automobile reliability was often questioned by potential buyers. These public demonstrations were instrumental in building the company's reputation and attracting further orders, solidifying its place among the pioneering French automakers alongside established names. By the close of the 19th century, Société Renault Frères had transcended its garage origins to become a formally recognized manufacturer within the burgeoning French automotive sector. With its innovative direct-drive Voiturette gaining traction, a rapidly expanding production capability, and a clear strategy for leveraging both engineering prowess and high-profile public demonstrations, the company was poised to transition from an experimental startup to a more established industrial entity.
