The genesis of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. is inextricably linked to the austere yet fertile ground of post-World War II Japan, a landscape characterized by widespread devastation, resource scarcity, and an urgent need for practical, affordable transportation. Soichiro Honda, a figure renowned for his engineering prowess and hands-on approach, had already established a notable career prior to the formal establishment of Honda Motor. Following the war, with his prior enterprise liquidated, Soichiro Honda sought a new challenge, identifying the critical need for personal transportation that was beyond the bicycle's inherent limitations yet more economical than a full automobile. His initial concept was disarmingly simple yet profoundly impactful: to attach small, war-surplus generator engines to bicycles, thereby creating an affordable, motorized two-wheeler. This innovation, first appearing around 1946, began with the adaptation of Tohatsu engines, and quickly evolved into the development of Honda's own proprietary engine. He swiftly established a nationwide sales network, rationalized payment structures for suppliers and dealers, and secured crucial credit lines, all vital in the cash-strapped post-war economy. Their partnership, forged in 1949, would become a legendary pairing in Japanese industrial history, combining inventive genius with astute business leadership and a clear division of responsibilities: Honda focused on product development and manufacturing, while Fujisawa managed all business and financial operations.

The path to formal incorporation was not without its challenges. Initial operations involved rudimentary workshops and the necessity of sourcing materials and skilled labor in a resource-depleted economy. Material shortages frequently required improvisation, such as sourcing scrap metal and re-purposing components. The initial capital investment stood at 1 million yen (approximately $2,700 USD at the time), a modest sum reflecting immediate post-war economic conditions but sufficient to establish a legal entity and fund initial operations. The company commenced operations with approximately 34 employees at its Hamamatsu base. The initial business concept, born from the exigencies of post-war recovery, rapidly evolved from merely providing an engine attachment to conceiving and producing entire two-wheeled vehicles. The limitations of clip-on engines – including safety concerns, the structural weaknesses of bicycle frames under motor power, and inherent inefficiencies – quickly became apparent.
