The genesis of what would become Adidas is inextricably linked to the socio-economic landscape of post-World War I Germany and the singular vision of Adolf Dassler. Born in 1900 in Herzogenaurach, Bavaria, Dassler emerged from a family with a background in textiles and laundry, a common vocation in the region at the time. His early life was characterized by a practical, hands-on approach to craftsmanship, a trait that would later define his professional endeavors. Following his return from World War I, in a period marked by severe economic instability, hyperinflation, and a burgeoning need for reconstruction, Dassler began to experiment with shoe production in his mother's laundry room. This initial venture, driven by a keen interest in athletics and a belief that specialized footwear could significantly enhance an athlete's performance, was a radical notion in the early 20th century footwear industry, which largely offered only general-purpose shoes lacking sport-specific features. While Adolf dedicated himself to product development and innovation, Rudolf managed the business operations, fostering relationships with sports clubs and regional athletic associations, and expanding the company's reach through direct sales to athletes and retailers. This division of labor proved highly effective in the early years, propelling the factory's growth from a handful of employees to a significant regional employer. The reputation of the Dassler brothers' shoes began to spread rapidly, particularly within German athletic circles, owing to their perceived performance advantages. Early documentation indicates that athletes wearing Dassler shoes achieved notable successes in various local and national competitions, contributing to the factory's growing prestige and driving a steady increase in production capacity, reportedly reaching several hundred pairs per week by the early 1930s.

A significant turning point in the factory's early history occurred at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. Adolf Dassler personally traveled to the Olympic Village, a bold initiative for a shoe manufacturer at the time, reportedly carrying a suitcase full of his spiked track shoes, seeking to convince athletes to use his footwear. Among those who adopted his specialized shoes, which were specifically designed for speed with their lighter construction and elongated spikes, was the American sprinter Jesse Owens. Owens went on to win an unprecedented four gold medals, providing an unparalleled endorsement for the Dassler brothers' product on a global stage. This highly publicized achievement, at an event with immense international viewership and significant political undertones, solidified their reputation. The success at the Olympics served as powerful validation for their specialized footwear concept, demonstrating the tangible benefits of their design principles and generating a demonstrable surge in international inquiries and sales in the immediate aftermath, elevating the company from a regional success to an internationally recognized, albeit unofficial, brand.

The outbreak of World War II, however, brought profound disruptions to the factory's operations. Civilian production was severely curtailed due to raw material rationing and labor redirection, and the facility was repurposed for military needs, producing specialized boots for the Wehrmacht, including paratrooper boots, which utilized the factory's shoemaking expertise. The wartime environment, coupled with existing personality differences, exacerbated tensions between Adolf and Rudolf. While the precise details of their disagreements remain subject to historical interpretation and varying accounts, company records and former employee testimonies indicate a deepening rift that grew increasingly irreconcilable during and immediately after the war. Following the cessation of hostilities in 1945 and the subsequent Allied occupation of Germany, the brothers' relationship deteriorated past the point of repair. The mutual distrust and fundamentally differing visions for the future of the company – Adolf's unwavering focus on innovation and performance versus Rudolf's broader commercial and market-driven approach – led to an irreversible decision to separate. Industry observers noted that such splits, while often acrimonious, were not uncommon in family-run businesses navigating the intense post-war economic environment, characterized by collapsed infrastructure, material shortages, and denazification processes. In 1948, the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory was formally dissolved, following a protracted division of its assets, including factory buildings, machinery, patents, and customer lists. Employees were also divided, with some choosing to remain with Adolf and others joining Rudolf. This partition was a definitive end to their joint venture, paving the way for the creation of two separate entities, both originating from the same entrepreneurial lineage but destined to become fierce competitors in the global sports footwear market.

Adolf Dassler, retaining the main factory premises on one side of the Aurach river, officially registered his new company on August 18, 1949. He ingeniously combined elements of his first name and surname to create the brand name "Adidas," derived from "Adi" (a diminutive of Adolf) and "Das" (from Dassler). Concurrently, he legally registered the iconic Three Stripes mark, an enduring symbol that had already been used on some of his earlier shoe designs primarily for structural reinforcement. This formal establishment marked the official birth of Adidas AG, embarking on its independent journey with a clear and unwavering focus on athletic performance and a legacy of innovation already firmly in place. With the post-war "Wirtschaftswunder" (economic miracle) beginning to take hold in West Germany, creating a fertile ground for businesses focused on consumer goods and recreation, Adidas was poised to expand its influence far beyond its humble origins and rapidly emerge as a leading force in the burgeoning global sports market.
